Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef joint
Its bones and meat flavour the broth during the long, steady simmer.
Pearl barley
Swells as it cooks, adding body and thickening the soup.
Potatoes
Soften into tender pieces that add starch and body to the soup.
Carrots
Add sweetness and colour as they cook into the broth.
Turnip
Adds a mild, slightly peppery flavour and soft texture to the soup.

The step that matters

Keep the simmer steady and skim the foam. A gentle, steady simmer after the initial boil keeps the broth clear and the meat tender. Skimming the foam removes impurities that would otherwise cloud the soup and taint its flavour.

Swap the tomato

The recipe marks tomato as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, barley, turnip, carrot, celery, pepper, potato):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Spinachfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, barley, turnip, carrot, celery, pepper, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
