Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Veal
Forms the main meaty body of the cake, becoming tender when stewed.
Bacon
Adds savory fat and flavor that moistens the layers as it cooks.
Hard-boiled eggs
Provide firm, sliced layers that hold their shape and add richness.
Gravy
Adds moisture and concentrated meat flavor, helping the cake set when cooled.

The step that matters

Let it cool completely. Gelatin from the stewed veal and gravy sets as it cools, so the cake holds its shape only when fully chilled before turning out.
