Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Savoy cabbage
Its leaves wrap the filling and become tender and pliable during soaking and boiling.
Rice
Absorbs liquid and cooks into a soft, bulking base that holds the filling together.
Sausage meat
Supplies fat and savory flavor that moistens the rice filling as it cooks.
Onion juice
Adds aromatic onion flavor to the filling without adding chunks of onion.

The step that matters

Pressing the cabbage gently but firmly together before boiling. Snug layers keep the filling in place during the long simmer. Pressing too hard can tear leaves, while loose wrapping lets filling escape into the water.
