Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main body of the soup and flavour from browning and simmering.
Flour
Coats the chicken so it browns well and helps thicken the soup slightly.
Butter
Adds richness and browning flavour to the frying fat.
Oysters
Add briny, savoury flavour to the broth as they cook.
Okra
Releases natural starch that thickens the soup and adds body.

The step that matters

Browning the chicken on all sides. Browning builds deep flavour through the Maillard reaction. Pale chicken added to the pot gives a flatter, less savoury broth, and dredging in flour helps the surface brown evenly.
