Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Macaroni
Forms the bulk of the dish and carries the sauce.
Milk
Provides liquid and creaminess that forms the base of the sauce.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the sauce and macaroni.
Egg
Thickens the sauce as it heats, giving it a creamy body.

The step that matters

Stirring in the beaten egg. Egg proteins set when heated, so the sauce thickens. If it gets too hot or is heated too fast, the egg can scramble and turn grainy. Keep the heat gentle and stir constantly.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter, cheese, egg):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Cinnamonfits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. White pepperthe original
