Assemble and garnish

  1. Mix the celery with the chicken and your choice of dressing.

  2. Garnish with sliced or quartered hard-boiled eggs, celery leaves, or lettuce hearts.

  3. Add olives and small stars or diamonds cut from boiled beet for decoration.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold boiled chicken
Provides the main protein and bulk of the salad.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh crunch that contrasts the soft chicken.
Chicken salad dressing or mayonnaise
Binds the chicken and celery together and adds moisture and richness.
Hard-boiled eggs
Adds soft, mild richness and a decorative finish.

The step that matters

Soaking the celery in ice water. Soaking in ice water firms and crisps the celery cells, so it stays crunchy instead of limp once it is mixed with the dressing.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, cucumber, egg, lettuce, olive):
