Winter Squash

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the squash

  1. Cut the squash in half and remove the seeds and fibers.

  2. Cut the squash into convenient pieces and pare off the rind.

  3. Place the squash in a steamer over clear water or alongside a dish that won't affect its flavor.

  4. If boiling something else, lay a cloth in the bottom of the steamer to prevent flavor transfer.

  5. Steam the squash until tender, checking the time as needed.

Mash and season

  1. Once done, place a clean towel in a bowl, add one piece of squash at a time, and squeeze out excess water.

  2. Mash the squash through a vegetable sifter and return it to a saucepan.

  3. Add butter, coarse sea salt, and pepper to taste, and stir until heated through before serving.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Winter squash
Forms the main body of the dish, and its starch and sugars give the mash its texture and sweetness.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, giving the mash a smoother mouthfeel and a rounder flavor.

The step that matters

Squeezing out excess water. Steamed squash holds water that dilutes the mash and makes it loose. Squeezing each piece in a towel before mashing concentrates the flavor and gives a thicker, more spoonable texture.

Swap the winter squash

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Winter squashthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
