Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the meaty body and savory flavor of the soup.
Eggs
Set when heated, thickening the milk into a smooth, custard-like body.
Milk
Adds creaminess and, with the eggs, a silky texture.
Bread crumbs
Absorb liquid and help thicken the soup.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Pouring the boiling milk over the eggs. Eggs are proteins that set when heated. Pouring the milk in while stirring gently warms the eggs evenly. If they get too hot or are not stirred enough, they can curdle and leave the soup grainy.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, bread, egg, milk, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, bread, egg, milk, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
