Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Goose
Provides the main meat and rendered fat that bastes the bird as it roasts.
Sage leaves
Adds a sharp, aromatic herbal flavour to the onion stuffing.
Onions
Soften when blanched and simmered, adding sweetness and moisture to the stuffing.
Bread crumbs
Soak up butter and onion juices, binding and thickening the stuffing.
Butter
Carries the aromatics and adds richness to the stuffing.

The step that matters

Simmer the stuffing mixture. Simmering for 10 minutes with stirring cooks off excess moisture from the onions and sage, so the bread crumbs can absorb the butter and the stuffing holds together instead of turning wet.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sage, butter, pepper, bread):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Carrotfits better
