Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Forms the main body of the dish and provides the meat that is cooked through in the oven.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the butter and seasonings to form a moist, flavourful stuffing dressing.
Butter
Adds moisture and richness, and helps the skin brown as it cooks.
Flour
Coats the skin so it crisps and browns in the oven.

The step that matters

Roast until fully cooked. The dressing inside the bird must also reach a safe internal temperature, and the stuffed cavity slows heat reaching the centre, so the bird can look done outside while still undercooked inside. Checking the thickest parts of the meat and the stuffing helps prevent this.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, butter, pepper, flour, bread, parsley, thyme):

  1. Marjoramfits better
  2. Sagethe original
  3. Winter savoryfits about as well
  4. Tarragonfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, butter, pepper, flour, bread, parsley, thyme. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
