Toast and Water
Ingredients
Directions
Toast the bread
Cut the bread into a piece weighing about ¼ pound.
Toast the bread on a fork about 6 inches from the fire, turning it often until it is light yellow.
Move the bread closer to the fire until it is a good brown chocolate color.
Make the toast water
Place the toasted bread into a jug and pour 3 pints of boiling water over it.
Cover the jug until it cools, then strain the mixture into a clean jug.
Do not leave the toast in the water, as it may cause fermentation.

What each ingredient does
- Crusty bread
- Toasting browns the bread, and its flavor and color dissolve into the boiling water.
The step that matters
Strain the toast out of the water. Leaving the toast in the water can cause fermentation, so it should be removed once the water has cooled and flavored.
