Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Celery
Forms the main body of the dish and carries the sauce and topping.
Fine grated parmesan cheese
Adds savoury flavour and browns as it melts in the oven.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden topping that contrasts with the soft celery.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top surface brown in the oven.

The step that matters

Sprinkling the cheese and crumbs on top. Cheese and crumbs need an even layer so the top browns evenly. Browning comes from Maillard reactions at oven heat, so a thin, uneven layer can scorch in spots while the rest stays pale.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sauce, parmesan cheese, bread, butter):

  1. Capersfits better
  2. Parsleyfits about as well
  3. Garlicfits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sauce, parmesan cheese, bread, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
