Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lentils
Break down when cooked to give the soup its body and thick, smooth texture.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.
Broth
Provides the cooking liquid and savory flavor that the lentils absorb.

The step that matters

Pass the mixture through a fine sieve. Lentils must be cooked until fully soft before straining, otherwise the puree stays grainy and the sieve will not press it smooth. Pressing firmly pushes the softened pulp through while leaving skins behind.

Swap the lentils

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, onion, celery, butter, bread, ham):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Lentilsthe original
  3. Peasfits about as well
  4. Lima beansfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against carrot, onion, celery, butter, bread, ham. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
