Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Form the main body and, when steamed, turn tender and moist around the stuffing.
Bread crumbs
Make up the stuffing and form a crisp, browned topping in the oven.
Egg
Brushed on before baking, it helps the crumb topping stick and encourages browning.
Butter
Adds fat and richness and helps the surface brown.
Onion
Adds savory aroma and flavor to the stuffing.

The step that matters

Steam until just tender. Cucumber is mostly water and softens quickly with heat. Overcooking makes it limp and watery, so it can collapse and lose the shape needed to hold the stuffing.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cucumber, butter, onion, mint, bread, egg, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Avocadofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cucumber, butter, onion, mint, bread, egg, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
