What each ingredient does

Rich biscuit dough
Forms a sturdy crust that encloses the filling and browns during baking.
Roast beef or beef steak
Provides the main savoury flavour and meaty body of the filling.
Cold potatoes
Add starchy bulk that soaks up juices and gives the filling a soft, hearty texture.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavour and moistens the filling as it bakes.
Cold gravy
Adds moisture and savoury depth so the filling does not dry out in the oven.

The step that matters

Cover the dish with more dough, leaving a slit in the center.. The top crust must seal the edges well so juices do not boil over, and the slit lets steam escape so the crust bakes crisp rather than soggy.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, biscuit, pepper, butter):

  1. Potatothe original
  2. Onionfits about as well
  3. Chivefits about as well
  4. Spinachfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, biscuit, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
