What each ingredient does

American or swiss cheese
Melts and provides the main savory, creamy filling in the sandwich.
Neufchatel cheese
Softens into a spreadable paste that adds moisture and mild tang.
Grated cheese
Blends with cream or butter to form a rich, spreadable filling.
French mustard
Adds sharp acidity and aroma that cut through the richness of the cheese.
