Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream
Whipped to stiff foam, it gives the salad its light, airy body.
American cheese
Adds rich cheese flavour and body to the creamy mixture.
Gelatine
Sets the mixture so it holds its shape when chilled in a mold.

The step that matters

Fold in the grated cheese gently. Whipped cream holds its air through its fine bubble network. Vigorous stirring deflates it, so the mixture turns dense and heavy before it sets.

Swap the mustard

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, cheese, milk):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Onionfits about as well
  3. Asparagusfits about as well
  4. Mustardthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, cheese, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
