What each ingredient does

Hops
Add bitterness and aroma that balance the sweetness of the molasses.
Molasses
Provides sugar that the yeast ferments into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars, producing carbonation and alcohol as the brew stands.
Wintergreen
Adds a strong minty, aromatic flavour to the finished beer.

The step that matters

Add the yeast at milk-warm. Yeast works best at lukewarm temperatures. If the mixture is too hot, it can kill the yeast and stop fermentation; if it is too cold, fermentation is slow and weak.
