What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and, as it simmers, the broth that becomes the gravy.
Baking powder biscuits
Soak up the gravy and serve as the base the chicken sits on.
Butter
Adds richness and a rounded, savoury flavour to the finished dish.
Flour
Thickens the liquid into a gravy that clings to the chicken and biscuits.
