Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fillet of beef
Forms the main body of the dish and carries most of the flavour.
Melted fresh butter
Adds fat and moisture, coating the steak to keep its surface from drying out.
Fresh parsley
Adds fresh, herbal aroma that brightens the rich butter.

The step that matters

Broil the steak over hot coals. Intense direct heat browns the surface quickly, building flavour. If the heat is too low the steak cooks grey and dry before a crust forms.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleythe original
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Tarragonfits less well
  4. Sagefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
