Beefsteak Pie

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Make a thick paste by mixing flour and butter, then knead quickly on a board.

  2. Roll out the paste flat with a rolling pin.

  3. Turn the dish upside down on the flattened paste and cut out the cover shape.

  4. Roll out the trimmings and cut into strips.

  5. Wet the edges of the dish and place the strips around the edges as a foundation for the cover.

  6. Season the beef slices with salt and pepper, then roll each slice into a small bundle or lay them flat in the dish.

  7. Add a little gravy or cold water and a tablespoon of flour for thickening.

  8. Place the cover on the dish, pressing down the edges tightly.

  9. If any paste remains, cut or stamp it into decorative shapes and place them on the cover.

  10. If desired, glaze the crust with a mixture of beaten egg white and water or sugar and water after removing from the oven.
