Why it works: Bread and butter are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 7% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 27,232 recipes. Both carry delta-decalactone, which smells sweet, creamy. The science ↓
Poached Eggs
Ingredients
Directions
Poach
Fill a saucepan with water to three-quarters full and add vinegar or lemon juice and salt.
Bring the water to a boil.
Crack the eggs on the edge of the pan and gently slide them into the boiling water.
Cover the pan and simmer gently for about 3-4 minutes until the eggs are cooked to your liking.
Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and briefly dip them in cold water to set.
Serve
Serve the poached eggs on fried bread or croutons, topped with melted butter or your choice of sauce.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Eggs
- Egg whites set around the yolk, forming the poached structure while the yolk stays soft.
- Vinegar or lemon juice
- Acidity helps the egg white coagulate more quickly and hold together in the water.
The step that matters
Sliding the eggs into simmering water. Eggs dropped into water that is not gently simmering can spread and tear apart. Cracking them near the surface and lowering them gently keeps the whites compact so they set into a neat shape.
