Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cooked chicken
Provides the main body and protein of the salad, held together by the dressing.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mildly vegetal crunch that contrasts with the soft chicken.
Oil mayonnaise
Adds fat and moisture, coating the chicken and celery and binding them together.
Whipped cream
Lightens the dressing and adds richness and softness when mixed with mayonnaise or cooked dressing.

The step that matters

Drying the celery before mixing. Wet celery dilutes the dressing and makes it thin and watery, so the celery should be patted or spun dry after soaking and before it is mixed with the chicken.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, cream):

  1. Garlicfits about as well
  2. Celerythe original
  3. Tarragonfits about as well
  4. Rosemaryfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
