Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mushrooms
Form the main body of the dish and release moisture that flavors the simmering liquid.
Butter
Enriches the mushrooms and carries flavor while they simmer and brown.
Broth or cream
Provides the cooking liquid that gently softens the mushrooms and makes a rich sauce.
Bread rounds
Act as a base that soaks up the mushroom juices and holds the mushrooms on the platter.

The step that matters

Cover the dish before baking. Covering traps steam so the mushrooms cook through and stay moist, while the short uncovered-free bake without it could dry the surface.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mushroom, butter, chicken, pepper, bread):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against mushroom, butter, chicken, pepper, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
