Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream
Provides fat and richness, giving the ice cream a smooth, creamy texture.
Sugar
Sweetens the base and lowers its freezing point, keeping the ice cream softer and scoopable.
Bananas
Add flavor and body, with mashed fruit contributing moisture and sweetness.

The step that matters

Add the banana paste near the end of freezing. Adding the banana paste once the ice cream is nearly frozen keeps it from being overworked and helps its flavor and texture stay distinct rather than turning icy or watery.

Swap the banana

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, sugar, vanilla):

  1. Strawberryfits better
  2. Raspberryfits about as well
  3. Figfits about as well
  4. Bananathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, sugar, vanilla. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
