  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped beef, crushed soda crackers, eggs, butter, pepper, salt, and sage until well combined.

Bake

  1. Add a little butter and water to the tin.

  2. Bake for one hour, basting frequently.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main body and meaty texture of the dish.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set firm when baked.
Soda crackers
Absorb moisture and help hold the roll together.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture to the beef during baking.

The step that matters

Basting the roll during baking. Regular basting with the butter and water in the tin keeps the surface moist, so the beef does not dry out over the long hour in the oven.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
