What each ingredient does

Bran
Provides the main flavour and body of the tea as its compounds release into the hot water.
Boiling water
Acts as the solvent that extracts flavour from the bran during steeping.
Sugar or honey
Adds sweetness to taste.

The step that matters

Cover the jug while steeping. Covering keeps the water hot and steady, so flavour is extracted evenly over the full 15 minutes. Straining afterward removes the bran so the tea is clear to drink.
