What each ingredient does

White cabbage
Forms the crisp, bulky body of the salad.
Onion
Adds sharp, pungent flavour that contrasts with the cabbage.
French dressing
Adds oil and acid that moisten the cabbage and carry flavour.

The step that matters

Drain and dry the cabbage between towels.. Excess water dilutes the French dressing and makes the salad soggy. Thoroughly dried cabbage holds its crispness and lets the dressing cling to the shreds.
