Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Soften when stewed and form the sweet, moist topping for the bread.
Bread
Provides the crisp base that holds the stewed apples.
Butter
Fat that carries flavor and browns the bread when frying.
Powdered sugar
Sweetens the apples and helps them stew to a soft, syrupy texture.

The step that matters

Fry the bread until crisp and golden. Bread fried in butter over medium heat browns through the Maillard reaction and crisps on the surface. Too little heat leaves it pale and soft, while too much heat burns the butter and the sugar before the bread is cooked through.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, bread):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Applethe original
  4. Peachfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
