Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein that cooks gently by steam, staying moist and tender.
All-purpose flour
Thickens the cream and gravy into a smooth, body-rich dressing.
Cream
Adds richness and fat, giving the dressing a softer, smoother texture.

The step that matters

Stir flour into cream until smooth before adding to the gravy. Flour clumps if it hits hot liquid directly. Mixing it into cold cream first disperses the starch so it thickens the dressing evenly without lumps.

Swap the nutmeg

The recipe marks nutmeg as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, flour, cream):

  1. Turmericfits about as well
  2. Garlicfits about as well
  3. Nutmegthe original
  4. Tarragonfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, flour, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
