  3. Butter the pan well.

  4. Season the chicken with pepper and coarse sea salt.

Bake and serve

  2. Moisten and butter the slices of bread.

  3. Lay the bread on a platter.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main cooked meat and the juices that become the gravy.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the pan and bread brown and taste savoury.
Bread
Forms the base that soaks up the juices and gravy.
Cream or milk
Adds body and richness to the gravy.
Flour
Thickens the gravy as its starch swells when heated in the liquid.

The step that matters

Thicken the gravy with flour. Dry flour clumps when dropped into liquid. It must be evenly mixed in and heated so the starch swells and thickens the gravy smoothly.
