Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Sweetens the punch and balances the sharpness of the lemon.
Lemon
Adds acidity, and its peel oils add fragrance when rubbed with sugar.
Rum
Provides the spirit base and warming flavour.
Brandy
Adds body and a rich, warming flavour alongside the rum.
Nutmeg
Adds a warm, aromatic spice note.

The step that matters

Mix the sugar and lemon juice together. Sugar dissolves most easily in the lemon juice before the spirits are added. If it stays grainy, the sweetness will be uneven and the punch will taste harsh.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rum, brandy, sugar, nutmeg):

  2. Figfits better
  3. Apricotfits better
