Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

White sugar
Forms the sweet candy base that sets into a creamy mass as it cools.
Walnut halves
Add a crunchy texture and nutty flavour against the soft candy.
Water
Dissolves the sugar so it can be boiled to a syrup evenly.

The step that matters

Boil until the mixture threads. Sugar syrup must reach the right concentration to set properly. Under-boiling leaves candy too soft to hold its shape, while over-boiling makes it hard and brittle.

Swap the walnut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, vanilla):

  1. Chestnutfits better
  2. Almondfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
  4. Walnutthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, vanilla. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
