Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Veal
- Forms the main meat filling that becomes tender during slow, moist cooking.
- Butter
- Adds richness and flavour to the initial frying of the meat.
- Bacon
- Adds savoury, salty fat that flavours the meat and gravy.
- Suet crust
- Forms the sturdy pastry casing that holds the filling during boiling.
The step that matters
Boil continuously. The pudding must stay submerged in gently boiling water for the whole time. If the water drops and stops boiling, the suet crust cooks unevenly and the meat may not become tender and fully cooked.
Swap the thyme
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (veal, egg, butter, pepper):
- Parsleyfits better
- Sagefits better
- Nutmegfits better
- Thymethe original
Fit is the average pairing score against veal, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
