Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Gives the broth its rich meaty flavor and body as it simmers.
Barley
Thickens the broth slightly and adds a chewy texture to the soup.
Carrots
Add sweetness and color, and the grated carrot deepens the broth's hue.

The step that matters

Skimming the foam after the boil starts. Foam contains coagulated proteins and impurities that can cloud the broth and taint its flavor if left in, so they should be skimmed off as it comes to a boil.
