Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pumpkin
Forms the main body of the dish, cooking down into a soft, mashable pulp.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, giving the pumpkin a smoother, silkier mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Cook gently until the pumpkin breaks apart. Gentle heat softens the pumpkin's cell walls evenly so it breaks down into a smooth pulp. Boiling too hard can make the outside waterlogged while the centre stays firm, leaving lumps after sieving.

Swap the pumpkin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Pumpkinthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
