Why it works: Pine and cherry share more aroma than cooks usually use. They rank in the top 8% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 80 recipes. Both carry eucalyptol, which smells eucalyptus, herbal. The science ↓

Syrup White Pine Compound

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mix the white pine, wild cherry, Balm of Gilead, Soikenard, and blood root in a bowl.

  2. Moisten the mixed drugs with 20 fluid ounces of the menstruum (alcohol, glycerin, and water).

  3. Transfer the mixture to a percolator without packing and cover tightly; let it stand for 24 hours.

  4. Pack the mixture firmly and pour on the menstruum; percolate until you obtain 5 pints 5 ounces of tincture.

  5. Retain this tincture as the finished product and continue percolation to exhaustion, pressing out the drugs with a tincture press.

  6. To the 5 pints 5 ounces of tincture, add 6.5 lbs of granulated sugar and shake until dissolved.

  7. If necessary, filter the syrup, then add 25.7 grains of morphine acetate dissolved in 9 fluid drams of chloroform and 3 fluid ounces of alcohol; shake well.
