What each ingredient does

Asparagus stalks
Forms the main vegetable topping and gives the dish its fresh, grassy flavour.
Bread
Provides a crisp base that soaks up the flavourful asparagus cooking liquid.

The step that matters

Boiling the asparagus until tender. Asparagus cooks quickly once tender, and overcooking turns it soft and dull. Boiling it in water until just tender keeps the stalks firm and bright green.

Swap the asparagus

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, bread):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Spinachfits about as well
  4. Asparagusthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
