Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomato pulp
Forms the thick body of the soup and provides its acidity and tomato flavour.
Corn or lima beans
Adds tender pieces and sweetness that hold their shape through canning.
Okra
Adds body and thickness as it softens during the long cooking.
Sugar
Balances the tomato's acidity and rounds out the flavour.

The step that matters

Cook down to a ketchup-like consistency. Tomato pulp holds a lot of water, and cooking it down concentrates flavour and thickens the soup. Stopping too early leaves it thin and watery, which affects both taste and texture once packed.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, corn, okra, sugar, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Sweet potatofits better
  3. Eggplantfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, corn, okra, sugar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
