Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clams
Provide the main seafood flavor and the chunky, tender texture of the chowder.
Potatoes
Supply starch that gives the chowder body and a soft, creamy texture as they cook.
Onion
Adds aroma and mild sweetness as it softens during cooking.
Turnip
Adds mild sweetness and extra body to the mixture.
Beef
Contributes savory, meaty depth to the broth.

The step that matters

Leaving the small hole before the long boil. The vent lets steam and trapped air escape during the first heating. Sealing it before the 1.5-hour boil keeps the can closed while the contents reach full cooking temperature, so the seal forms properly and the chowder stays safely preserved.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (clam, potato, onion, beef):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Carrotfits better
  4. Turnipthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against clam, potato, onion, beef. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
