Toast and Water

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut crusts from the stale wholemeal loaf, twice as thick as usual.

  2. Toast the crusts carefully until browned and hard, but not burnt.

  3. Alternatively, cut the crusts into dice and roast slowly.

  4. Pour boiling water into a heated jug and add the toast crusts or roasted dice.

  5. Do not pour the water directly onto the toast.

  6. Let it stand until cold, then strain to remove grit.

  7. Serve hot or cold as desired, adding flavorings like lemon, orange juice, currant jelly, or grated apple if desired.
