What each ingredient does

Finely-ground coffee
Provides the flavour and body of the brew, extracted by the hot water over time.
Freshly-boiled water
Extracts the soluble flavour compounds from the coffee grounds when poured over them.

The step that matters

Pour the coffee carefully through the muslin. Pouring slowly and steadily keeps the fine grounds trapped in the muslin, so the coffee stays clear instead of gritty.
