Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the dough

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Peel and core the apples.

  3. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.

  4. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  5. Add water gradually to form a dough.

  6. Roll out the dough and cut into squares large enough to wrap around each apple.

Wrap and bake

  1. Place an apple in the center of each square, sprinkle with sugar, and wrap the dough around the apple.

  2. Place the dumplings in a greased baking dish, and dot with butter.

  3. Sprinkle with additional sugar and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All-purpose flour
Forms the dough structure that holds the apple inside while baking.
Unsalted butter
Cut into the flour for a flaky, tender crust and dotted on top for richness and browning.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the dough, helping it rise and stay light.
Apples
Soften as they bake, becoming the tender, sweet filling inside the wrapper.
Sugar
Sweetens the apples and helps the top of the dough brown.

The step that matters

Wrapping the dough around the apple. The dough must be sealed fully around each apple; gaps let the filling leak and the dough dry out or brown unevenly in the oven.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, butter, sugar):

  1. Raisinfits better
  2. Vanillafits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, butter, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
