Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean beef
Provides the main meaty body and substance of the hash.
Mutton
Adds richer, more intense meat flavor to the mixture.
Fresh pork
Adds moisture and fat that keep the slowly cooked meat tender.
Bacon
Adds smoky, salty fat that flavors the meat as it renders.
Potatoes
Absorb cooking juices and add starch that thickens and fills the dish.

The step that matters

Remove excess fat before serving. Rendered fat pools on the surface during long slow cooking. Skimming it off keeps the dish from tasting greasy while the meat and potatoes stay moist.

Swap the onion
