Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Thicken the drink and give it a creamy, smooth body when beaten and combined.
Ale
Provides the liquid base and its malty flavor.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and balances the strong alcohol and spice.
Rum or brandy
Adds strength and warm, aromatic flavor to the drink.

The step that matters

Pouring back and forth between pitchers. Repeated pouring aerates the mixture and blends the hot ale with the beaten eggs. Pouring too little or too slowly can leave the drink lumpy or unevenly mixed.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, sugar, rum):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Gingerthe original
  4. Allspicefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, sugar, rum. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
