Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rabbit
Provides the meat that becomes tender during long, slow stewing.
Flour
Coats the joints for browning and later thickens the cooking liquid into gravy.
Clarified dripping
Fat that fries the floured joints, building browned color and savory flavor.
Stock
Forms the liquid base of the stew that cooks the rabbit and vegetables.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aromatic depth to the stewing liquid as it softens.

The step that matters

Browning the floured joints. Frying the flour-coated rabbit until browned develops rich flavor through the Maillard reaction. Pale joints will give a flatter, less savory stew and gravy.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rabbit, flour, carrot, turnip, celery):

  1. Parsnipfits better
