Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clear jelly
Sets into a firm, sliceable base that holds the mould's shape.
Macaroni
Forms the soft, starchy filling inside the set jelly.
Milk
Cooks with the macaroni to make it tender and creamy.
Loaf sugar
Sweetens the macaroni after it has cooked.
Preserved pineapple
Adds sweet, acidic fruit flavor and pieces throughout the jelly layer.

The step that matters

Letting the jelly set before turning out. Jelly only holds its shape once fully chilled and firm. Filling or unmoulding it too early can cause it to collapse or tear, and warm macaroni would soften the jelly.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pine, sugar, milk):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Lemonfits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pine, sugar, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
