Green Tea—iced Tea

Ingredients

Directions

Make the tea

  1. Scald the teapot.

  2. Add 1 quart of boiling water and 2 teaspoons of green tea to the teapot.

  3. If preparing for supper, do this at breakfast.

  4. At dinner time, strain the tea through a tea strainer into a pitcher without stirring.

  5. Let it stand until tea time, then pour into decanters, leaving sediment in the pitcher.

Serve

  1. Fill goblets with ice, add 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar to each, and pour the tea over the ice and sugar.

  2. Add a squeeze of lemon for flavor if desired.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Green tea
Provides the main flavor and bitterness of the drink.
Granulated sugar
Adds sweetness to balance the tea's bitterness.

The step that matters

Strain without stirring. Stirring or disturbing the steeped leaves releases more bitter compounds and fine sediment into the tea, so straining gently and leaving the sediment behind keeps the drink clear and less astringent.

Swap the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (green tea, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Orangefits about as well
  3. Lemonthe original
  4. Pineapplefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against green tea, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
