Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hard-boiled eggs
Yolks mash into a smooth, creamy base that binds the dressing.
Butter or olive oil
Adds fat and richness, giving the dressing a smooth, silky texture.
Turkey
Provides the main meaty body of the salad.
Strong vinegar
Adds acidity that sharpens the flavor and cuts the richness of the fat.

The step that matters

Pour the dressing over the turkey just before serving. Vinegar and acidic dressing gradually soften and dull the minced turkey and celery if they sit together too long, so dressing late keeps texture crisp and flavors fresh.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, egg, pepper, mustard, butter, vinegar, ham):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Parsleyfits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against turkey, egg, pepper, mustard, butter, vinegar, ham. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
