Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Venison
Forms the main body of the soup and provides its meaty flavor as it simmers.
Ham
Adds savory, salty depth to the broth during the long stew.
Butter
Adds richness and body to the broth as it melts into the liquid.
Port or madeira wine
Adds acidity and sweetness, rounding out the flavor of the broth.

The step that matters

Stewing the venison gently with the lid on. Gentle, covered simmering keeps the meat tender and moist while its connective tissue slowly softens. A hard boil toughens meat and can make the broth cloudy.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (venison, ham, onion, pepper, meat, celery, butter):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against venison, ham, onion, pepper, meat, celery, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
